The Weekly Download: Spyware Doctor

This weeks great (and free) download is Spyware Doctor from PC Tools.

If you have noticed your computer running slower than usual, or are experiencing unusual pop-ups, you may have spyware.

Spyware is basically software hidden in free downloads (games, programs, etc.)and gathers information usually for advertising purposes.

Spyware Doctor can help. Spyware Doctor basically scans your computer for things such as Spyware, Adware, Trojan viruses, Keyloggers, and more.

PC Tools has won many awards for their creation of Spyware Doctor and the program has been downloaded over 30 million times.

With the free version, you can choose to do a full system scan, a quick scan or a custom scan.

I would recommend that you do a full system scan (registry & file system) at least once a week, especially if you download a lot.

Spyware Doctor searches quickly with its Intelli-signatures technology.

Another cool feature is that it can block custom made key-loggers in real time with Keylogger Gaurd (Patent pending).

Normally that would take weeks before it anti-spyware programs would be able to detect it.

If you buy a license from PC Tools you can get added protection with OnGaurd Protection.

Added is a browser monitor, a cookie monitor, an immunizer, a pop-up blocker, and a scheduler.

What I especially love, is that as its scanning you can minimize the program in the system tray so that your task bar is free for other programs.

I would highly recommend Spyware Doctor (as I myself own a copy) especially if you have spyware problems on your computer.

  • Welcome to pointless tech blog #23,412,814.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 8:47 AM

  • Hi,

This is not a pointless blog. Many people value the technological information that is contained in this blog.

Tech Guru takes a lot of hard work to run. You clearly do not have any experience in blogging.

I suggest that before you make selfish comments, that you try to set up a blog and get 150 page loads per day with a 5PR in 3 months.

By Blogger Tech Guru, at 9:43 AM

  • tech guru,

while you are correct Spyware Doctor is free to download, the trial version only scans your PC. Any problems found will not be repaired unless you buy the full version. Your post is somewhat misleading in it's content. I do use spyware doctor and it is a fine product but the trial version is quite limited in that respect.

By Blogger Bob, at 4:09 PM

  • If you're fooled by catchy made up terms like "Intelli-signatures" then a piece of crap program like this IS for you. Anyone who knows better wouldn't install Spyware Doctor if someone paid them. 4.5 out of 5 stars? For what? Heck if you don't pay for it you get NOTHING.

This program does nothing that LavaSoft's Ad-Aware can't... plus Ad-Aware actually works, instead of just trying to sound cool. I would do yourself a favor and take a pass on this turd of a Spyware program.

By Blogger hehmaster23, at 7:41 PM

  • Well I actually own Spyware Doctor and my problems are fixed (I too own the free version).

Some features are disabled, but all syware IS fixed.

Secondly, I too use Ad-Aware. However, I have scanned my PC with Ad-Aware and Spyware Doctor at the same.

While Ad-Aware may find the majority of spyware, Spyware Doctor found other things that Ad-Aware did not.

  • I'll put Ad-Aware's 85-90% catch rate up against Spyware Doctor's 35-40% catch rate. (this was verified by 8 different 3rd party security teams in 4 different countries) Sorry man but catchy made up terms doesn't equate to real world performance.

You'll give just about anything 4.5 stars. I would say your site is as informative as a wet fart.

Suicidal Text Messages

Everyone enjoys privacy and sometimes when we want to tell someone something private, we hope no one else finds out about it.

Find out how a company in UK has tackled this problem with text messages.

Staellium, the company, designed a service that allows you to send a self destructable text (or SMS) message to someone else.

Once the receiver open up the message and reads it, the message will self destruct in 40 seconds.

This service is very useful for business people, or celebrities who want to make sure that nothing incriminating gets leaked.

Of course, if you have a special secret you want to send off via text message, then you may also be interested.

Nothing, however, can be totally secret. A log of what the message contained needs to be stored in a secure server for legal reasons.

That message will never be accessed unless, it involved something against the law and in which case wouldn't be secret after all.

The service does cost about 88 cents per message and the suicidal messages must be bought in a pack of 10.

Got A Question? Yahoo Can Answer It!

Yahoo! has recently released Yahoo! Answers. It is very similar to Google Answers, but there are many differences. For starters: it's free!

Google Answers costs you $2.50 minimum per questions and guarantees that you will get one of its 500 researchers to answer to your question within 24 hours.

Yahoo! Answers is free and anyone can post a question or answer one. Why do I think this could be better than Google?

First, it's free. Secondly, just because you are not a "researcher" doesn't mean that you can't answer a question about something you know well.

I found the website to be very well designed and straightforward.

Simply sign into your Yahoo! account (create one first if you don't have one), then type your question in the text box.

Pretty soon someone will answer it. Your question remains open for two weeks and then it is closed. I asked a question and got a response within minutes.

Now here is what's neat. Yahoo! has set up a cool point system.

After signing up you instantly get 100 points. Each time you choose the best answer to your question you get 5 points. Put your answers to a vote and you get another 5 points.

You get one point for logging on, voting for an answer, or rating a best answer.

If you are rated as having the best answer to a question, you get 10 points.

The more points you have the higher your level (1-7). Right now the rewards aren't that great in my opinion (A super-special Yahoo! Answers thank you?? What does that mean?)

However all free things do have limits.

From levels 1-4 you get your level number * 10 (i.e. level 1 = 10) answers, questions, ratings.

Levels 5-7 have unlimited numbers of questions, answers and ratings.

The point system is interesting but I think the most important part is that Yahoo! Answers allows people to maximize what they know and help those who have that burning question.

It also allows you to search for answer to your question which may have already been asked.

I definitely like it. Is it better than Google? I think it just might be.

Visit Yahoo! Answers at http://answers.yahoo.com.

The Weekly Download: Google Earth

If you haven't downloaded Google Earth, you have to check it out. It's like having the world at your fingertips - literally.

You begin in space and there you can spin, tilt, zoom in and out of the Earth with your mouse.

You can zoom into landmarks (craters, CN Tower, Empire State Building, etc.) or right down to your address with stunning precision and graphical accuracy.

Now this would still be pretty cool, but it would get old fast. Thankfully Google Earth can be used for so much more.

Google Earth allows you to find all of the following information:

Dining
Lodging
Banks and ATM machines
Bars and Clubs
Coffee shops
Shopping Centers
Stores
Gas Stations
Golf Courses
Sports and Recreational Facilities
Schools
Crime Statistics
Census Results
Street Names

. . and a whole (I mean it) lot more

Better yet, it allows you to search for anyone of those things and can even locate any type of address.

Google Earth can even be used as to get driving directions (so say good-bye to Mapquest).

It's like a 3D map of the earth right in your hands. It'll amuse for hours. It's just so neat to zoom in and out of the earth, find interesting terrain or landmarks.

Google Earth is such a versatile tool that makes it a must have for just about everyone. The good thing is that you can even add your own annotations on the map.

For example I found a possible foundation of a villa in Italy that someone annotated.

Here are the recommended requirements to run Google Earth:

Operating System: Windows XP
CPU Speed: Pentium 4 - 2.4 Ghz or AMD 2400xp+
RAM: 512MB
Hard Disk Space: 2GB
3D Graphics Card: Compatible 3D Card with 32MB or more VRAM
Internet Connection: Broadband/Cable (128kb/s)

If you have those you will find the program to be visually stunning and highly detailed.

To download Google Earth or to find more information visit earth.google.com.

Give Google Earth a whirl and explore the world today.

  • Initially I was also amazed with this program. I later decided it wasn't practical for me. Also it would be really cool if the images were a bit more recent. I zoomed in on my house and realized the images were at least 4 years old.

By Blogger bschneider5, at 8:24 AM

  • This tool is really good. The satellite images aren't coming from Google, instead they're just comming from other satellite image companies like GlobeXplorer so some are recent others are not. Google just puts the images together.

Motorola RAZR V3c

You've probably seen the Motorola RAZR V3c cell phone on TV on in the hands of a someone. The first time I saw it I was absolutely stunned.

It was so thin! So if sleek is the look for you, then check out this phone.

The Motorola RAZR V3c is jammed packed with so many great features.

First, the looks. As mentioned it's sleek and sexy. Everyone loves it.
It also has a very beautiful screen with 2.2 inches of full color.

There are many great features, so let's get started!

The Camera
There are a lot of great multimedia features on this phone. The phone allows you to take pictures with its 1.3 megapixel camera with 4x zoom capability.

Videos
The Motorola RAZR V3c also allows you download and watch MPEG videos and that's where that full color screen plays it's part.

It also allows you to record video which is really neat.

The phone comes with the VCAST Service which uses the EV-DO network to download and stream videos. The EV-DO network is well known for it's fast data transfer.

To store these videos, pictures and music (yes you can use as an mp3 player) the RAZR contains up to 30MB of file storage.

Messaging
Hey, who said you had to only send text messages. While the Motorola RAZR allows you to text message why not send pictures and videos to your friends. Share the memories with everyone.

Is this phone Bluetooth Enabled?
Yes it is. This means you can use Bluetooth enabled headsets on this phone.

Here are some other features of the RAZR V3c cell phone:

  • A 3D engine for games

  • 72 polyphonic sound engine

  • Battery lasts for 200 hours on standby and 188 minutes when talking

Of course this phone does the standard things that every cell phone does, but it's the ability to add all these extra features and more in such a small and sleek package that makes it so amazing.

If you are going to buy this phone, I suggest getting it in black. It looks much more sleek and stylish. The Motorola RAZR V3c goes for around

Follow the link to find more information on the Motorola RAZR V3c cellphone from Motorola's official website.

Symantec PC Anywhere

If you are a small, large business owner or even a PC user who wants top of the line remote access to one's computer then check out Symantec's PC Anywhere.

This software has been already out for more than a year and has proven to be top-of-the-line software.

So what is remote access? Well for those who don't know let me give you a simple real life scenario.

Imagine that you have to finish a project for your work, but you forgot to bring the files home so that you could work with them on your home computer.

Normally, you would be in a very bad dilemma. PC Anywhere let's you connect to your any computer from your home computer over an Internet connection.

Symantec uses a AES encryption (up to 256-bit cipher strength) through a cryptographic module.

This means that anything you do over the remote connection is secure and that a hacker would not be able to find out what you have been doing.

The program allows you to connect to the computer, run programs, transfer files and basically manage and control the host computer.

Here is a full list of features:

  • Connects to a Linux or Windows computer.

  • Built in AES 265-bit encryption.

  • Host Conferencing allows many users to remotely connect to a single PC.

  • Connection Wizard ensures a quick connection.

  • File Transfer Status allows the user to see information on the progress of the transferring of files

  • The ability to connect to a computer from a Pocket PC

  • Ability to access to technical support for servers, networks, and workstations

Symantec's PC Anywhere is very robust. It adds a lot of features for small business and large businesses.

This probably shouldn't be used by the average Joe if they aren't willing to spend a little time getting used to the program.

The software goes for $199.95 (US). To find more information visit the Symantec's PC Anywhere page at Symantec's website.
